Asexuality and an Asexuality Movement Are Not The Same Thing

Doctor Gloria Brane recently addressed the topic of Asexuality on her Seriously Sexual podcast. The segment occurs early in the podcast, and the listener quickly hears that Brane has little to say that has not been said before. She addresses Asexuality as a medical issue and then as a psychological issue. There is little to comment on. Brane could have started out the show on a different footing if she had visited AVEN. One problem in particular comes from her describing Asexuality as a movement rather than an orientation.

Certain Asexual sites, including this one, have referred to the Asexuality movement. The staff of Asexual News expect people to know that a movement is represented by organizations. Asexuals may or may not have a libido, a fact which Brane glossed over briefly. What people who discuss an orientation that came out of the closet only recently need to do is distinguish between a movement and the orientation, something she did not do on her Seriously Sexual podcast.

Certainly, the phrase ‘gay movement’ is used by members of the media, but it more accurately refers to the Gay rights movement. Few people, outside of socially conservative circles, suggest that people decide to become Gay just to join some larger movement. Brane, and perhaps others like her, need to stop contributing to the notion that Aces are simply choosing to react badly to an oversexualized society.

The doctor may not have meant to contribute to these stereotypes, but she seemed to take her talking points from the same sex therapists that Asexuals have criticized over the notion of Asexuality in past. Seriously Sexual’s host may be guilty of nothing more than getting her research material from only one source.
