Dan Savage's position 'mischaracterized by angry Asexual Bloggers'

Dan Savage would not pass for an expert on Asexuals or Asexuality, but he still will comment on Asexuals from time to time. In the most recent case, we cannot blame the author of Savage Love too much because someone wrote into him asking for advice. Savage has failed to understand what the backlash against him from the Asexual community was all about.

Savage inhabits some bizarre world where Asexuals are just trying to trap sexual people into relationships only to deny them sex. A similar idea has followed male to female transgender individuals around for years. When the Ace bloggers took up the cause against Savage, they were taking issue with the way he gave his advice, not with the advice itself. The columnist can accuse people of mischaracterizing him all he wants, but in this one case he is mischaracterizing the position of the people who took issue with him.

At least no one on either side has attempted to suggest the other side should shut up. The few activist campaigns Aces have run have been remarkably polite. A good example is the flap that occurred when Teva Women's Health released an ad where a poster said she would become Asexual after a birth control accident. The issue got resolved and no one was picketing. A few Asexuals announced their intent to boycott the product anyway after the issue got resolved, bu they likely never would've used the product in the first place.

Mister Savage, if you would like to clarify your position on an Asexual site, you are welcome to send us a response. You'll get your byline and a chance to clarify your position for Angry Asexual bloggers.
