Advice columnists occasionally deal with an Asexual reader. One such reader wrote into the Dear Ellie column. The letter writer does not give her name, but she tells a familiar story. Like other Asexuals in a relationship with a sexual person, she was pressured into an uncomfortable situation.

Convention season has caused people to turn their thoughts toward politics. Many LGBT blogs have gotten into the act. Asexual sites have not gotten into the act. Politics certainly exist within the Asexual community, but there has been no need for Asexuals to favor one political candidate or another because of their orientation. If either party could influence the DSM-5 committee, this might change.
Asexuals have just as much interest in the political process as their counterparts, but the community, as a whole, does not worry about whether Mitt Romney or Barack Obama will win the election. (People who have read this site since January may remember that this site endorsed Penn Jillette for President. The staff made this decision because members were sure he was not running).

Asexual groups often view themselves as members of the larger LGBT community. This should not be discouraged, but the activists may want to slow down. Is it safe to rely on these groups to pursue Asexual issues? LGBT groups push for greater Gay and Lesbian rights, but they often ignore their other constituencies.
The same-sex marriage debate is the most obvious example of this trend. While pushing for marriage equality, GLAAD, HRC and other groups are not fighting for employment and housing protections for non-gender conforming individuals. The same sex marriage debate is in the public eye, but other important issues should not be forgotten.

Sexuality and theology rarely intersect. When they do, it is because people insist on literal interpretations of ancient texts. Lachelle Schillings commented on the need for Asexuality in theology discourses. She does not really explain why there is a need. Schillings instead relates a tale about her version of the conception of Jesus.
It is difficult to tell from the text whether she intends to tell a tale of a Lesbian conception or a sexless conception. Gabriel, Mary and Joseph appear in her narrative, but she introduces a new character. Elizabeth is present at the moment Jesus enters Mary's womb, although the role she plays is unclear.

A number of writers have focused on one sentence in Understanding Asexuality. They want to assume that Asexuality is a reaction to the oversexualization of the culture. It seems as if the writers are continuing to find some reason to dismiss the idea of Asexuality. The idea that people who do not experience sexual attraction are broken continues, despite evidence to the contrary. The new line is perhaps more socially acceptable, but it ignores one key piece of information that is also in the book. Asexuals existed before the idea the idea of sexual orientation emerged. They existed long before Kinsey published Sexual Behavior in the Human Male.
The quoted statement does appear in the book, but it is taken out of context. Bogaert does not say that Asexuality exists because society is oversexed. It is more accurate to say Asexuals are starting to come out of the closet because of the oversexualization of culture. Another researcher, Mark Carrigan, calls this the sexual assumption.
Although sociological textbooks tend to state simple ideas in complex languages, this is an idea that is not hard to understand. Simply put, Carrigan states that almost everyone assumes people have a Heterosexual, Homosexual or Bisexual orientation. He details it on his blog, but he does not do so using academic research. He uses comments from an article in The Guardian as an example.
