Bert and Ernie have no sexual orientation

Rumors about Bert and Ernie's sexuality have floated around for years. The two muppets have appeared in many pieces of slash fiction on the Internet. The producers of Sesame Street have wisely ignored these stories for years. The producer recently announced the Muppets have no sexual orientation.

The announcement that the Muppets have no sexual orientation came about because of a petition on Change.org to have Bert and Ernie get married. Stephen Hillenberg, creator of Spongebob SquarePants, made a similar announcement when Conservative Christian groups were denoucing the show because they thought spongebob was/is gay.

The creators of the Change.org petition asked for the characters to marry Bert and Ernie or to introduce a transgender character to the show. The petition suggests that showing a married gay couple or a transgender character would give children positive LGBT role models.

Jamie Wieman, a columnist for the Canadian magazine, Maclean's, claims that the Asexuality of Bert and Ernie are built into the pair. The columnist goes on to explain why Ernie would make a terrible life partner, citing the ways Ernie has kept Bert awake over the years.
