RA Candidate at Miami University Files Complaint Against College President for Being Assigned to Female Dorm

Kaden Kass, an FTM student at the University of Miami applied for a job as a resident adviser. Kass told the university staff that he expected to be housed in a male dormitory, but when the application was approved, he was told he would preside over a female dormitory. Although Kass presents as male, his birth certificate still says female.

Miami University of Oxford Ohio’s non-discrimination policy prevents discrimination on the basis of race, religion, country of origin, veteran's status, sexual orientation or gender identity. When the student filled out his application, he made sure Residence Life was aware of his housing requirements. Living in sex-segregated dorm with female students was not acceptable to Kass.

Miami University's director of GLBTQ Services, Demere Woolway, was involved in talks with the University, but apparently had little sway in the official decision, according to Unicorn Booty. Woolway expressed disappointment that the university could not fulfill the request.

Kass has filed a complaint with the Equity and Equality board agains the university's president and against the office of student life.
