Nikkia Araguz Continues Fight for Benefits After the Death of Her Husband

Nikki Paige Araguz filed a lawsuit against the city of Wharton, Texas. The firefighter’s widow was denied the death benefits because a void copy of her birth certificate indicates she was born male. Texas law does not permit people who undergo SRS to change their gender on their birth certificates.

Judge Randy Clapp further than simply ruling that Araguz was not the proper widow. Clapp voided the marriage on the basis that same-sex marriages are illegal in the state of Texas.

The Federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission ruled that Title VII protections apply to gender minorities as well as sexual minorities. The news does not prevent housing discrimination in states that do not prevent discrimination on the basis of gender identity.  The EEOC’s April 20 ruling supersedes state laws that allow for discrimination on the basis of gender identity.

It Doesn't Get Better Video Features Shrill Voices and Probably Should Not Have Gone Viral

Asexual News readers who wonder why people find the FCKH8 campaign annoying can find out why by watching this video. The video is painful to watch, even if it is funny at points. FCKH8 may appeal to some people, but videos such as this are more likely to make problems worse if they are viewed by the people the video targets.

There is a place for this sort of dialogue, but the shrill voices and loud annoying voices are better suited to protest rallies and message board forums. Videos that turn off even people who are sympathetic do nothing to acheive the desired effect.

An Asexual's Reflections on a Day of Silence Vigil

(Note: This is written in first person. This is not normally appropriate for Asexual News stories).

I attended a Silence the Hate Vigil tonight. People showed up, lit candles and a speech was given. The Luzerne County Community College Adjunct campus students gave small speeches and there was a small display featuring the history of the day and brief pieces of biographical information about LGBT figures.

Child Celebrities Stand Up to Kirk Cameron

Kirk Cameron offered his opinions on same-sex marriage during the Piers Morgan show recently. Many people have justifiably criticized Cameron for his opinions, although they have missed one key element. Cameron, one of the former child actors on Growing Pains, has exercised two of his first Amendment rights by making the statements. The first amendment guarantees the freedom of speech and the freedom of religion. (It also guarantees three other freedoms, none of which are applicable to this situation).
