Pennsylvania Defense of Marriage Bill Blocked in Committee

New York allows same-sex marriage. New Jersey allows Civil Unions. Maryland recently passed a law allowing same-sex marriage. Pennsylvania, another state in the Mid-Atlantic, marriage has its own fight in the battle for marriage equality, even though Pennsylvania has other more pressing issues to worry about when it comes to preventing discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Pennsylvania LGBT rights advocates scored a small victory this Tuesday. Gay rights activists prevented a committee from voting on a bill that would define marriage as being between one man and one woman. Some states already have this wording in their constitution, while others have considered a defense of marriage amendment.

Church of England Approval Needed to Change UK Marriage Law Says Bishop of York

Gay marriage in Great Britain does not face as many problems as it does in the United States. Even though it does not face as many legal problems, the Church of England's Bishop of York warned that parliament would need to get the church's approval.

Jon Sentamu said the church would have to be consulted before Parliament approved any change to the definition of marriage. Article 30 of the Church of England and the 1662 prayer book define marriage as being between one man and one woman. York's bishop believes that parliament will need to consult the church before it changes the current legal definition of marriage.
